Claxton Elementary School serves approximately 860 students in kindergarten through fifth
grade. The implementation of the workshop models and conceptual approach
embraces best practices in education and is guided by the Design Team.
Standards based instruction has been
practiced at Claxton Elementary School for eight years. A team approach is used
for instruction in all grades with teachers specializing in literacy or
mathematics. Literacy instruction is based on the workshop approach. Reading
and writing are emphasized in all areas of the curriculum. Home reading is
encouraged through a reading campaign; the theme for this year's campaign is
Read like a Rock Star!
Mathematics instruction is provided
during two segments to enhance conceptual understanding and skills. Calendar
math and math workshop are approaches applied to teaching mathematical
concepts. Additional instruction in math is used to develop mathematical
fluency and to enhance problem solving skills.
A science lab is provided for all
students at CES. GPS science standards are followed as students participate in
many hands-on activities. Fine art is introduced and taught through integration
into other instructional areas. Students in grades four and five have an
opportunity to audition for participation in the school's chorus. Chorus
performances feature both vocal and instrumental musical selections. Community
involvement within these performances is a unique aspect of this versatile
group.
Technology is an integral part of the
instruction at CES. With the addition of two mobile computer labs which contain
16 laptop computers each with wireless Internet and printing capabilities, three
hard-wired computer labs, SmartBoards in all classrooms in grades 3-5, Classroom
Performance System, and wireless slates; teachers are able to supplement their
classroom instruction.
The school facility includes sixty
classrooms, a multipurpose room, media center, science lab, choral room and
three computer labs. Students also enjoy the use of a soccer field, softball
field, basketball goals, and a large variety of playground equipment.
