Evans County Schools Graduation Rate Exceeds State
With a district graduation rate of 82.76%, Evans County Schools has exceeded the state graduation rate of 82.0%. The district graduation rate includes graduates from the district’s two high schools, Claxton High School and Second Chance Academy.
Claxton High School’s 2019 graduation rate of 89.62% is an increase of 7.82 from its 2018 graduation rate.
“We are very proud of our graduation rate at Claxton High School. The increase in our graduation rate reflects the exceptional work of our students, teachers and staff as well the support of our parents who, together, have made this significant milestone possible for our students while preparing them for this very important first step into a career,” stated Dr. Paul Mizell, Principal of CHS.
The official graduation rate of 89.62% does not include two students with disabilities, who while they met all of the requirements identified in their Individualized Education Plans (IEPs), these students are not counted as high school graduates as per state department rules. The inclusion of these two students would make the 2019 graduation rate for CHS 91.62%.
“While the state does not officially recognize the hard work of two of our high school completers as graduates, we want to celebrate their accomplishments and the dedication of these students, teachers and families in making sure these students met all of their goals,” stated Dr. Marty Waters, Superintendent of Evans County Schools.
Second Chance Academy, the district’s second high school, did not receive an individual graduation rate for 2019 due to having too few students identified as part of the 4-year co-hort for graduation. To have a co-hort, each school must have a minimum of 15 students for a graduation rate to be calculated.
In Georgia, the graduation rate is calculated using a four-year adjusted cohort model. When students enter the ninth grade for the first time, the group is identified as a cohort. Students who transfer into the school during the next three years are added to the cohort, and students who transfer out of the school during the next three years are subtracted from the cohort. Because transfer students have been added or subtracted from the original cohort number, the cohort is identified as “adjusted.” The four-year adjusted cohort rate is the number of students who graduate in four years with a regular high school diploma divided by the number of students who form the adjusted cohort for the graduating class.
