Important Information

May 3, 2023: Claxton High School (CHS) has named two new head coaches for their boys and girls basketball teams. CHS is excited to announce John Floyd as the new girls basketball head coach and Cornelius David as the new boys basketball head coach.

Mr. Floyd, a teacher at The Academy in Evans County Charter School System (ECCSS), brings a wealth of experience to the Lady Tiger basketball program. Mr. Floyd has been teaching and coaching for 25 years in Claxton. He has coached seven sports over that span of time, including basketball, tennis, football, baseball, softball, track, and cross country. For the last 23 years, he has assisted with the boys basketball program under the leadership of Eric Bluestein (17 years) and Mark Stroud (six years).

Floyd stated, “I have high expectations for all students, athletes, and coaches that I have the opportunity to work with. I am thankful and humbled to be a part of the Tiger Nation.”

Mr. David, a native of Swainsboro, Georgia, also has an impressive coaching background. Mr. David coached varsity football at Toombs County High School in Lyons, Georgia for four years. David then returned to his alma mater as an assistant coach for Swainsboro High School (SHS) varsity basketball under the tutelage of Coach Bobby Andrews and Coach Brice Hobbs.  Under David’s assistance, SHS basketball earned a region championship, sweet sixteen appearance, and state runner-up. David was also an assistant coach for the varsity football program where he coached three region championship teams and the 2022 Georgia High School Association state football championship runner-up.

David stated, “I am not only responsible for guiding student athletes in the right direction in a school setting but also in their everyday lives. Helping students understand the importance of building character while being consistent in their efforts as student athletes makes what I do so enjoyable.  I am not only mentoring athletes but also creating future leaders. This is the true highlight of being an educator and coach.”

Dr. Mizell, principal at CHS, stated, “We want to officially welcome Coach Floyd and Coach David as they take the reins of our basketball programs.  Both coaches bring a great deal of coaching experience to our programs and are ready to get to work with their respective teams.”
