May 12, 2025: The Evans County Board of Education and Superintendent Dr. Martin G. Waters have mutually agreed that Dr. Waters will conclude his service with the Evans County Charter School System effective May 31, 2025. This decision reflects a shared commitment to a smooth and respectful leadership transition that supports the continued progress of the district.
Dr. Waters has served as superintendent since 2016 and has spent more than 25 years in public education. His time in Evans County has focused on aligning academic, operational, and community efforts to improve student outcomes and district performance.
Under Dr. Waters' leadership, Evans County Charter School System transitioned to a Charter System, expanding academic and career opportunities through local School Governance Teams, career pathways, dual enrollment programs, accelerated career diploma options, and the PK–12 fine arts programming. Major capital investments included the ESPLOST-funded construction of Claxton High School and College & Career Academy, Tiger Town Stadium, and safety and transportation enhancements. He worked with district leaders to maintain a balanced budget, reduce the local tax burden, and increase revenues. He also supported the restoration of the Joyce NeSmith Auditorium and served on various local, regional, and statewide boards.
“It has been a privilege to serve the families and educators of Evans County,” said Dr. Waters. “The past nine years have been a time of both challenge and progress. I’m grateful to have worked alongside so many dedicated professionals who care deeply about our students. I believe the district is in a strong position to continue its path forward.”
Board Chair Durell Lynn stated, “Dr. Waters has led with professionalism and care. His work has laid a solid foundation for academic growth, operational improvement, and community partnership. We thank him for his service and wish him the very best in the future.”
The Evans County Board of Education will communicate its plans for leadership transition in the coming weeks.
