Evans County Charter School System appreciates the partnership that they have with Georgia Southern University! In November, Dr. Kania A. Greer (Coordinator of Center for STEM Education), Chestina Craig (GSU Biology Grad Student), and Michael Brenne (GSU Biology Grad Student) provided professional learning identifying characteristics of vertebrates and invertebrates. They demonstrated how to dissect various specimens and classify them. The following educators participated in the professional learning and dissected specimens: Nick Hodgson (CHS), DeeDee Gordon (CHS), Amy Robinson (CHS), Casey Rogers (CES), Kelly LaSala (CES), Jennifer Lewis (CES), Aiyana Pearson (CES), and Samantha Keyfauver (ECCSS) Mrs. LaSala shared her knowledge with fifth graders. Students were able to investigate the dissected specimens to identify the biology and characteristics of vertebrates and invertebrates. #ActiveLearning #4Cs #RealWorldExperiences #CommunityPartnerships #CollegeandCareer

Claxton Elementary School recently sponsored a canned food drive to benefit the Evans County Food Bank. This service project aligned with the current mindset, "Live to Give". Students and staff donated to the cause and over 350 items were collected! Grade levels competed against one another to encourage the donation efforts. The following homeroom classes were recognized as collecting the most items in the grade level. They were rewarded with a extra-special recess. Kindergarten - Ms. Hendrix 1st - Mrs. Whitfield 2nd - Mrs. Hollingsworth 3rd - Mrs. Laird 4th - Ms. Mikell 5th - Mrs. LaSala Mrs. Cowart's PreK class was the school-wide winner! They donated the most items overall. In the spirit of giving, CES hopes that our donations will make a difference for others in our community.

Mrs. Yurek's eighth-grade students worked in groups to perform a "Character Autopsy" of characters from the novel, A Long Walk to Water. Students made character evaluations based on their different abilities as they related to certain parts of the body. For example, for the "brain," one student reflected on the difficulty the character experienced due to his worrying thoughts about his family. #activelearning #creativity
