Last week, our second-grade students dove into a fun and hands-on learning experience in the Collaboratory! Before arriving, they read Measuring Penny, a book about a girl named Lisa who learns to measure her dog in creative ways—like using both inches and dog biscuits! Inspired by Lisa’s adventure, students took measuring to a whole new level by combining it with robotics. In the Collaboratory, students estimated how many Root robots tall various dog breeds were on posters displayed around the room. They programmed the robots to measure their estimates, then revised their guesses after testing their code. After discovering the actual number of robots tall each dog was, they used tape measures to record each dog’s height in centimeters, comparing the sizes of different dogs. This engaging activity connected literacy, robotics, and math standards: • MDR.5.1: Students constructed simple measuring instruments and compared unit models to rulers. • MDR.5.2: They practiced estimating and measuring to the nearest whole unit using standard tools. • MDR.5.3: Students measured to determine how much longer one “dog” was than another. • MDR.5.4: They asked and answered questions based on their observations, using data to solve relevant problems. By integrating literacy, robotics, and math, our second graders honed their measuring skills and enjoyed an interactive way to learn!

The DEN's newly formed book club met this week! Participants read and discussed A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder by Holly Jackson! Some key themes explored: 🔍 True Crime Parallel – We drew a connection to a real-life case, discussing how the novel's storyline mirrors a true crime mystery. 🏙 The Role of Setting – The small-town atmosphere added a layer of suspense, reminding us of how a tight-knit community can impact a mystery and keep secrets buried just beneath the surface. 👩🦱👨🦱 Teens Doing the Heavy Lifting – We admired how Pip and her friends take on the role of “amateur detectives.” Be on the look out for the announcement of our book club's next selection and meeting date!
