🌎 Weathering in Action: 6th Graders Shake, Soak, and Rust Their Way Through Earth Science! 🌟 Last week in Ms. Myers’s 6th Grade Earth Science class, students transformed into geologists-in-training 🧑‍🔬 as they explored one of Earth’s most powerful surface processes: weathering. And instead of just reading about it 📖, they experienced it firsthand—with the help of common household items! 🧂🧪 Using materials like vinegar 🥤, salt 🧂, hydrogen peroxide 🧴, water 💧, steel wool 🧵, chalk 🪨, sugar cubes 🍬, and gravel 🪨, students rotated through engaging hands-on labs 🔬 that modeled the three types of weathering: 🪨 Physical Weathering was on full display as students placed sugar cubes and gravel into sealed containers and shook them with energy 💥. This represented the mechanical breakdown of rock—like what happens when rocks tumble and collide in rivers or landslides 🌊🏔️. 🧪 Chemical Weathering stole the show with two powerful stations. One involved placing chalk in vinegar, simulating how acidic rainwater dissolves rock 🌧️. Another combined hydrogen peroxide, vinegar, salt, and water with steel wool, resulting in a dramatic rust reaction 🔥🧲. This showed how chemical processes—like oxidation—alter and break down rock at the molecular level ⚛️. 🌱 Biological Weathering was also introduced through discussions and examples of how living organisms, like growing tree roots 🌳 or burrowing animals 🐾, contribute to the breakdown of rock. Throughout each station, students observed changes 👀, made predictions 🤔, and recorded evidence 📝 of how Earth’s surface is constantly being reshaped 🔄. It was messy, exciting, and full of “aha!” moments 💡—the perfect recipe for deep learning 📚.
