Before Christmas break, students in Mrs. Myers' 6th grade Science class studied the differences between renewable/sustainable energy resources (examples: hydro, solar, wind, geothermal, tidal, biomass) and nonrenewable energy resources (examples: nuclear: uranium, fossil fuels: oil, coal, and natural gas), and how they are used in our everyday lives. Students researched and collected data on renewable and nonrenewable resources in Georgia. Early January, students took the information they learned and created a diorama of the natural resources, how they are harvested, and how we use them in our everyday lives.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is the only federal holiday designated as a national day of service to encourage all Americans to volunteer to improve their communities. Dr. King said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’” Dr. King believed that strength came from a community working together as a whole. This MLK Day, honor the memory of Dr. King by giving back to your community. Here are a few suggestions: **Make “caring cards” to take to a local senior center. **Contact your local animal shelter to find out their needs. **Have your child pick out one item each time you go to the grocery store. Once you’ve collected enough to fill a bag, take it to a local food pantry. **Donate gently used books to be placed in lending libraries . **Volunteer at a nonprofit. **Prepare a meal for someone in need. Here are some ways that you and your family can celebrate Martin Luther Jr. Day from home. https://camp.com/articles/ways-to-celebrate-martin-luther-king-jr-day-at-home
